I’m A Tourist In My City

The downside of being an introvert.

I was born in Rabat, Morocco, and lived here for 22 years, and I haven’t visited most of the city.

As a kid, I didn’t go out with my family a lot. When we got to go out, we visited very few famous places, and that never bothered me before.

Once I could go out alone or with friends, I found myself a stranger in my city; I felt horrible when my friends; who live in other cities; took me to some of the most beautiful places ever, and I didn’t know they existed before.

About 3 years ago, I went to Hassan Tower for the first time in years; I was so excited to be there and looked foolish in front of my friends. You can see the excitement on my face!

first time visiting the Hassan Tower alone

I waited for my best friend to come from El Jedida to show me a coffee shop that was literally 10 minutes away from my school;

The biggest slap on the face I got was when about a couple of weeks ago, a very dear friend of mine (hi hamza) invited me to go to Chellah, and I was sure I had been there and insisted that I knew the road, just to find out that I have in fact never been there, I didn’t even know where it was, and I had it mixed up with the Udaya (which I only visited once, when I was a freaking child) this revelation woke me up and made me realize I know nothing about my city.

The only good thing about this is that whenever I get to visit a new place, I enjoy it more than my friends because it’s new to me.

So, I have decided to go on a journey (after I get vaccinated of course), I will visit every famous place in Rabat, I will post updates every time I go to new places.

Here are a few places I want to visit:

  • Kasbah of the Udayas.
  • Chellah (I am so excited for this one).
  • National Zoo Rabat Morocco (I went twice, but I want to go again).
  • Andalusian Gardens (Which I discovered like 1 minute ago thanks to Google wtf).
  • Archaeological Museum (I know I will enjoy this).
  • Botanical Garden (Which is 5 minutes away from where I live).
  • National Photography Museum (Which was apparently an old prison that I didn’t know about).

Do you see how long that list is??? I feel bad saying that I’m from Rabat when I haven’t visited half of it.

Let me remind you I am the most introverted person I know, I rarely go out and when I do, I go to places I’m familiar with.

Lately, a friend had been pushing me out of my comfort zone and doing his best to show me around and he doesn’t even live in Rabat :).

Stay tuned for the beginning of my journey, I am open to suggestions.
