As a daughter who will become a parent someday, I have a few tips that I know will be very useful in parenting kids because who knows better about raising a kid than a kid itself?

  1. Space: Always give your child some space, they’ll talk to you when they’re ready, don’t push it.
  2. Attention: Give your child the attention they need and deserve, if your child comes to you with a painting they made for an example, show them that you like it even if you don’t because they put a lot of effort into it and that effort shouldn’t go in vain.
  3. Trust: Your child should trust you, never tell their secrets to somebody else even if it’s a small secret especially if your child asked you to not tell anyone.
  4. Love: Tell your kids that you love them from time to time, it doesn’t matter if you show them your love, they need to hear it from you.
  5. Safe: Your child should feel safe when around you, as a parent, you should never fight with your partner in front of them, you should never make them side with a parent and see the other one as the bad guy.
  6. Gossip: you should never tell your kids gossip about a family member or a friend, it teaches your kids that gossip is okay which is not.
  7. Truth: You should never lie to your kids no matter how hard the truth might be, your kids should be able to trust you and the only way for them to do that is by being honest.
  8. Acceptance: Accept your child’s opinions and choices no matter how different they are from yours, everyone is entitled to an opinion no matter their age.
  9. Education: Educate your kids and teach them about life because home is just another school and talk to your kids about sensitive subjects to avoid future problems (Sex ed for example).
  10. Believe: Listen to your kid’s problems and believe them, for example; if your kid says that they are depressed you should believe them and try to help them. Believe your kids even if it doesn’t suit you, because their health (mentally and physically) matters.
